Red Bull Project Air 2010 bowl training from world of freesports on Vimeo.
The World Tour is just around the corner: only five days away. The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover will be the first of ten stops on the tour this season. And to get its surfers ready for all the excitement and opportunity of this year’s tour, Red Bull is putting its team riders through surf camp. It’s called Project Air. And — you guessed it — Red Bull is giving its riders wings and launching riders off ramps, all in hopes of getting them “in tune” with being in the air, perfecting the sport of aerial surfing and taking it to new heights.
“The future of the sport will revolve around manoeuvres done in the air,” said Red Bull Australia performance coach and former pro surfer Andy King, as reported in an article from Stab Magazine. But what’s interesting about this surf camp: is it another crazy marketing tactic from Red Bull? Or is it a killer strategy for its team? Or both? Either way, Red Bull is getting noticed. And Red Bull surfers are having fun, and getting in the air. After all, if the future of the sport really is in the air as King says, then this really is the ideal camp for these surfers.

The Red Bull Project Air takes a completely new angle on training methods. Incorporating techniques from sports like skating or snowboarding, the largest foam pit ever is constructed to improve the surfers’ aerial moves in a safe training environment. Coaching sessions by pro skaters and the cross disciplinary approach will advance their skill level in a way never seen before.
The exclusive training experience is provided to a top cast of 16 surfers, including Sofia Mulanovich, Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith and Evan Geiselman. The worlds’ best will train with the up and coming juniors, girls and guys. Air training and conditioning combined with innovative equipment design, the ramp and the foam pit, medical and psychological tests and not to forget memorable freesurf sessions, will lead to a new level of performance in the surf sport.
